Magento 1 End of Life
On 1st July 2020 Magento stopped supporting Magento 1.
If you have a Magento 1 store what does this mean for you and your store?
What does Magento stopping support for Magento 1 mean, what is - end of life?
It basically means that Magento is having nothing more to do with Magento 1. The biggest thing being that it will no longer issue security patches for the Magento 1 platform.
You need the patches to fix any threats and vulnerabilities that have been discovered to help stop your site being hacked. Protecting your site from being hacked is a responsibility you have to your customers to protect their data as well as a requirement under the GDPR regulations. You also need the security patches to satisfy the Security Standard Council PCI requirements which are a regulatory requirement for selling online.
So Magento no longer issuing security patches is a big issue which can have very serious consequences.
Can you continue using Magento 1
We feel that you can continue to use Magento 1 and that it still has a lot of life left in it.
But there are some things that you should do to protect it.
If you take the measures below you should be able to keep on using Magento 1 for some time to come safe in the knowledge that your site is as secure as possible.
Install all the Magento released patches so that your site is as up to date as possible with all the official Magento released patches prior to July 2020.
Sign up with a third party patch vendor - they offer permanent, competent support for merchants who want to continue using Magento 1 and will provide security updates and technical adjustments so that Magento 1 can continue to be used with the latest technology.
Review the hosting with your current provider to ensure the PHP versions that are being run on Magento 1 and your server are up to date.
Review the payment methods that are installed to ensure they meet PCI requirements.
